frequent replacement
By Gman
These gears are made of powdered metal and wear extremely fast. The whole Kitchenaid gear assembly has been cheapened over the years by Whirlpool in their attempt to squeeze out every last dollar of value out of the Kitchenaid brand after purchasing the brand from Hobart.
This should get you by for 6 months. Stay away from bread and heavy doughs. Get a Bosch if you want to make bread (especially on a frequent basis). The Kitchenaid is great for whipping and beats the Bosch hands down on the light stuff...but Bosch has the gearing and design for the heavy stuff which will shortly destroy the Kitchenaid transmission.
I ended up buying my wife both mixers...after starting with 5 quart Kitchenaid and later moving to the 600 (metal transmission cover). 7 kids to feed!

5qt KitchenAid mixer Gear
By Derater
I replaced this in my 5 qt lift KitchenAid stand mixer and now it works great. I re-lubed it up and the machine works beautifully. I did replace the Gear 970337 as well. Watched a youtube video on how to replace it. Pretty easy overall.

Limited life; Second time buy
By singh2004
The product is machined as an exact replacement of the original work gear, with no visible flaws and fits exactly as the original one. This is my second buy of this replacement gear in two years, for a 10 year old mixer. The original gear which came with the new mixer lasted 7-8 years. The first replacement gear (same Amazon product as this one), lasted roughly 2 years and was worn out exactly the same way as the original product but in 4 times sooner. Considering the low price of this item, I have no complains as I got 2 years out of it, so I bought the same one again, hoping I will get another 2 years or so before other parts in the mixer start breaking and I will just replace the mixer.
Replacing the gear is very straight forward by opening the gear box, cleaning up old grease, looking for damage to other gears, installing new gear and gasket, and repacking with new grease. You will need to use food grade grease before repacking the gear box. I bought the Whirlpool branded grease http://www.amazon.com/Whirlpool-KitchenAid-4176597-GREASE which seemed to do the job (like any other viscous grease) but I cannot tell if it is food grade or not. See my review of the grease: http://www.amazon.com/review/RS7MPHODLIVKA.
If you are ok with the limited life of this gear, then it may be for you. Do not expect the same number of years (or even close) as the original product.
